Amadeus Expands Travel Payment Solutions with Acquisition of Voxel

Amadeus, a key player in the travel industry, has announced its acquisition of Voxel, a prominent provider of electronic invoicing and B2B payment solutions tailored for travel sellers, hotels, and related entities. This strategic move aims to bolster Amadeus’ commitment to streamlining the travel payment experience, particularly through its payments business, Outpayce.

Enhancing Travel Payments
The integration of Voxel’s solutions into Amadeus’ portfolio promises a broader array of payment services for travel sellers, accompanied by enhanced automation for managing invoices across various sectors such as tour operators, TMCs (Travel Management Companies), hotel aggregators, and individual hotels. The acquisition is poised to advance Amadeus’ capabilities in serving corporate clients, further streamlining processes spanning reservation, payment, and expense management.

Decius Valmorbida, President of Travel at Amadeus, emphasizes the significance of this acquisition, stating, “The addition of Voxel’s solutions enriches Amadeus’ end-to-end offering, leveraging smart technology to benefit the broader travel ecosystem. Seamless, integrated payments are pivotal in enhancing the travel experience, and our combined expertise will contribute to realizing this vision.”

Àngel Garrido, CEO of Voxel, expresses enthusiasm about joining forces with Amadeus, citing the latter’s global reach and expertise in travel technology. This collaboration is expected to accelerate innovation in automated technology, ultimately improving processes for both travel sellers and providers.

David Doctor, CEO of Outpayce, underscores the strategic importance of this acquisition in advancing Amadeus’ payment ecosystem. The integration of Voxel’s capabilities marks a significant milestone in realizing frictionless travel payments.

At Terapact, we've been building an end to end visualization to transaction platform for online and offline sales. This is a big story. Firstly Matterport are pleased to have a very profitable owner in CoStar - it has struggled financially for some time. Second and what nobody has mentioned so far is that integration of the tech will happen on both sides of the atlantic. Jason Tebb at OTM will be delighted with this as it gives OnTheMarket a highly differentiated and superior offering over Rightmove. The question is, with one European portal under his belt and a juicy tech firm to integrate into it, where will Andy Florance look next? PS: it's somewhere in Europe, and it's gonna be expensive.

Real estate search & discovery will move away from textual listings & map based searches towards a more immersive real life experience. This is a great acquisition however matterport as far as I know still requires some hard skills to be able to put a virtual together. Further they have yet to port a decent app to mobile and this will remain stagnant until mobiles LiSAR technology improves dramatically. All iPhones past 12 have a LiDAR camera but they are at a very nascent stage even today and are unable to pick up a room in 3D as effectively as a matterport camera. Once this tech is adopted to mobile then you’ll see real scale and growth amongst small to mid size agencies who can’t afford current matterport solutions

As someone trying to build something fundamentally innovative in the space, the Matterport deal resonates. Building innovative proptech is expensive and adoption can be slow -so Matterport's difficulty getting to standalone profitability is pretty understandable. Expanding into adjacent markets later to juice revenue can dilute focus + increase competition. However this is the only way we'll get the innovation we need in the space - the large real estate portals lack the incentive to build groundbreaking tech in-house (but they have the balance sheets to support it). Acquisitions like this gives the big guys a faster path to innovation, whether it's to gain a competitive edge (likely rationale), finally improve the end-to-end user experience, or signal (to their stakeholders) a strategic shift towards innovation.

For one, I think Zillow is trying to get out in front of the industry in terms of thought leadership. There is significant movement on the AI front and many of the companies experimenting here don't have deep knowledge of the industry and, from what I've seen' certainly haven't taken into account fair housing or other regulatory constraints. So Zillow made a smart move here.

The timing is also interesting since so much is in flux right now. Not only is cooperative compensation in question (in the U.S.) but the DOJ is pushing back on any discussion of compensation. So that will need to be considered and learned in this LLM that will be ever-expanding.

The World Economic Forum published guiding principles as industries integrated in AI. The document is called "Empowering AI Leadership: AI C-Suite Toolkit." In the article, it addresses Ethics in AI and ensuring non-discriminatory practices are followed in data sets and the extracted products of AI.
