Brad Banducci, the former CEO of Woolworths, has invested in a $2 million Seed funding round for 8seats, a workplace messaging platform aimed at deskless employees. Banducci, who stepped down earlier this year, joins a group of investors that includes Black Nova Venture Capital, TBWA President Paul Bradbury, former Prezzee CEO Tony Karp, Innovation Bay’s Ian Gardiner, Faethm founder Mike Priddis, and Greg Miller.
The startup, co-founded by serial entrepreneur Iain McDonald in 2021, positions itself as an alternative to established platforms like Salesforce’s Slack and Meta’s WhatsApp. With features designed to bridge communication gaps between desk-based and deskless workers, 8seats combines the functionality of workplace tools with the user-friendly design of consumer messaging apps. The platform has already processed over 300,000 messages during its closed beta phase.
The newly secured funding will support the platform’s scaling efforts, with plans to launch publicly in 2025 and expand into markets in the United States, United Kingdom, and Europe. The company has also participated in Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Google startup accelerator programs.
“In a world dominated by legacy platforms, we aim to provide businesses with a smarter and simpler way to connect employees, from the shop floor to the boardroom,” McDonald said. He emphasized that the platform helps mitigate risks tied to using personal messaging apps for work, such as data and security breaches.
Black Nova Managing Partner Matt Browne highlighted the global potential of 8seats, noting that the solution reimagines group messaging for businesses. “We’re excited to be early partners on this journey,” Browne added.
